Eddie Solomon Cancer Update/Fundraising "I refuse to give up, I refuse to die!"

Hi everyone
This is Eddie Solomon and I wanted to give you an update on my cancer and humbly ask for support.

To start off I just want to let everyone know! I refuse to give up, I refuse to die!

If you did not hear about my disease, please read my original post here from when I was first diagnosed.

After 8 months of eight 7-12 day high dosage chemotherapy cycles in the hospital, over 10 Spinal taps, and chemotherapy treatments in between the hospital stays I thought I was in remission and was so excited that my life could start once again. But, boy was I wrong, it just got so much worst and so much more serious. Going into my 8th and what I thought would be my last chemotherapy cycle I started feeling back pain. The pain went away for about 10 days during the hospital stay, but soon after it returned and it started becoming unbearable. After 3-4 weeks of telling my Dr. about this, we finally got a PET scan. It showed my huge tumor in my chest was gone Yeeh! But it also gave me the most devastating news, I have a brand new tumor in shoulder region of my back. The cancer that I have, Hi-Grade T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma is very rare and an extremely aggressive cancer. And unfortunately, my cancer got used to the chemotherapy drugs I was on.

I got the news that I am now Stage 4 (out of 4) and need a Bone Marrow Transplant to survive. It is now as life threatening as it gets. I have to get into remission in order to be eligible for a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Immediately, I moved to UCLA Ronald Regan Hospital to try new drugs that have not really been used on many people. The Dr. gave me a report about people wit this disease and the chances of survival are not good. There is 14.2% or 1 in 7 chance that I will survive, but I am confident I will be that 1.
This new chemo was super hardcore, I handled it fine at first and then it hit me hard after they released me from the hospital. After a couple of days at home I started getting really sick. And since I hate being in the hospital with a passion, I tried to handle by taking the antibiotics I had at home, and I did this for four days. But two weeks ago Sunday I could not handle anymore and had my dad take me to the emergency room at midnight. I had pneumonia, could not eat, had mouth sores and I lost 17 pounds. It has been absolutely horrible. Chemo kills everything in your body especially with the crazy toxic drugs they are giving me. It has been three weeks now since I got out of the hospital again for chemotherapy and they want me to start another chemotherapy cycle ASAP, but I need more time to recover and to get stronger. I cannot handle going back in yet.

Regarding the Bone Marrow Transplant. After a month of trying to get my insurance to approve the tests to see if my two brothers and one sister were a match, and then having the tests performed, I found out that they are not match for my bone marrow It will take atleast 3-6 months to find a match and I must do chemo the whole time. This is by far the biggest daily long term nightmare in the world and so hard on my family, let alone ability to work.

The Bone Marrow Transplant is very concerning. The mortality rate during the transplant or within the first 6 months is 40% +. It would be 30% if my donor was my sibling. There is a high chance of rejection from the donor marrow. The donor marrow is used to its owner, so it may or may not accept my body. This is horrible! When you get a bone marrow transplant, they basically almost kill you before the transplant takes place with 4 days of full body radiation and then most hardcore chemo therapy possible for 5-7 days. After the transplant they immediately suppress you immune system and continue to do so for at least one year and maybe for your whole life. So you will always be subject to getting sick easily and the cancer can also come back very easily.

I met with the representative of the Bethematch organization regarding a bone marrow drive. The lady kept asking me "Did you know" so and so. (another person who had cancer from my area) I kept on asking her "What do you mean DID?" She kept saying the person did not make it. His or her immune system was too weak from the chemotherapy. This bone marrow transplant sounds horrible. Having to do crazy chemotherapy that might kill me while waiting for a match and then once I find a match I may be so weak that I do not handle the transplant and them there's a strong possibility of the marrow not even being compatible with me and I could die anyways. This is not good.

The Bone Marrow Transplant totally freaks me out and the 40%+ chance of death is not a chance I am willing to take any longer if I have a better option. I will keep the option open and continue to look for a match, but a much better solution to save my life has been presented to me if I can make it happen.

Luckily a bodysurfer named Geoff from the Wedge came to my house and told me about his dad's and good friends research with stem cells in Germany which are far more advanced. It is not available in the USA yet, but it would save millions of lives. City and Hope, UCLA and every cancer hospital in America want to do it, but they have their hands tied. The stem cells retrieved can be multiplied and are targeted for my specific exact cancer. The stem cells are so much stronger/safer than getting random Adult stem cells from a donor here who may be actually end up giving me their cancer cells. There is ZERO chance of the body rejecting the cells which immediately takes away that 40% chance of death from rejection. I don't need to wait to find a match! This means there is no waiting around and getting killed by the chemotherapy first! There are proteins in the cells that are only available in these cells which kill cancer cells and there is ZERO suppression of my immune system. There is no toxicity. Homing occurs where the stem cells go to the area of my damaged/cancerous cells and fix/kill them. It makes the cancerous cells commit suicide. With this treatment I can potentially be back within a couple months. But, to do this I must travel to Germany where they are 50 years ahead of the cancer treatment in the USA. While everyone here has been debating, they have been saving peoples lives and curing what is currently incurable in America. It will replace the dead/cancer cells of my disease, and the new transplanted cells can bring life back to, or repair those cells which have not died but rather stopped functioning as a result of chemotherapy. They gave me a case study for people who had my exact diagnosis just like UCLA did (UCLA report had 14% survival rate). This case study done by Oxford University for people with my exact disease who did the stem cell treatment was 80% survival rate!! This is a must do!

Chemotherapy is killing me. Chemotherapy is cancer therapy which creates mass destruction of all the cells in my body. It kills the cancer cells but damages all healthy tissues, healthy cells and my whole immune system. I think it is good to take care of fast growing or large tumors like mine, but it is not a long term solution for many people. The Cancer will return unless you make big changes, especially in my situation. A drastic diet change completely stopping eating tons of the foods I love is mandatory. It sucks, I dream about In N Out, pizza etc.. now. Nutrition and supplements are key factors to me not relapsing again. For my particular cancer, the chemo often kills most of the patients before the cancer does. I support the chemotherapy for taking care of the problem in the short term, but this Bone Marrow Transplant is too nuts of a risk.

In order for me to have a real chance of survival I must go to Germany to get this treatment. The main problem is the cost of this treatment/trip which is in the $75,000 + USD range, which is not covered by insurance at all. I absolutely hate to ask people for help, I am always self sufficient. But medical bills have been out of control with insurance only covering so much and none of the brand named drugs. As an example, some shots I need cost me $1,000 each time and others I need to take 2X a day off and on for ten days at a time $300 each. It is hectic. In addition to me only being able to work at 10% of normal at best since last September. This is truly a dire situation. I am humbly asking for any support at all to help save my life. I had my pic line out for two weeks while I thought I was in remission and thought I was about to start life again. A pic line is 2 cords that come out of my inner bicep, going up my arm & shoulder down to my chest used for delivery of chemotherapy drugs and blood/platelet transfusions. I have had it since last September besides those two short weeks. I was able to take my son in the pool to go swimming for the first time since last summer. I cant wait to do that again.


Me at UCLA hospital when I first got checked in doing my laps around my floor to try keep some energy, my hair was just starting to grow back before going back in, its gone now. I feel nothing about having hair or not though, I want to live for my family.


It's all about these two!
