The Church of the flighting spagetti monster is perfect... I use in class as a reference all the time.  Its a great piece of satire on the foundation of religion and how easy it is to formulate a religious truth.

I would say that yes, most religions start out that way but to a point.  Western religions yes, eastern religions no.  (And by eastern I do not include Islam.)
