My thing:
It all depends on the type of surf you got. for me a hollo
w wave requires a board with a 50/50 rail. Also shape has a
huge barring on your ride, I like a narrow noise for deep
turns and the wide point of the board to be just up from ce
nter so i can lean hard into the turn without my shoulders
hitting the water. The more stringers the stiffer the board
, the bigger the wave the more a board will become "butter"
so big or powerful waves need boards with more stiffness.
Smaller waves need more flexable boards so easier manuvour.
I also like a reasonably wide base so that you can shift
the board for tho late drops and maintain the tail into the
wave and prevent drag. I prefer a cresent tail so my "boys
" dont get smashed on a bat tail.

My personal favorites are Mantas and Mike Stewarts. They both seemed to just meld with me like they are part of me when I'm on them. Cartels and Custom X are ok, but not the same feel with either. BZ's used to be good but I don't know how they are now. Mine is about 22 years old.

your height and weight are two key factors when gettin a board that is suitable for you.
(although once you start getting better you'll opt for smaller boards)
